Suntosh Pillay is the Chief Clinical Psychologist for the eThekwini district in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health. With over 15 years of experience in public mental healthcare, he is a respected voice in the field of LGBTQIA+ mental health, social justice, and decolonial psychology.


He is a co-author of South Africa’s first and only Practice Guidelines for Psychology Professionals Working with Sexually and Gender Diverse People, and has published widely—including in The Lancet Global Health.


Suntosh is a research affiliate at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, a YALI alum, and the co-founder of several grassroots advocacy initiatives that promote mental health equity and gender rights. He is also co-editor of the book Chasing Freedom and is currently completing his PhD in Psychology, exploring the intersection of race, sexuality, culture, and identity.
